Yellow And Grey Home Decor Ideas | Pantone Color of the Year 2021

3 yellow and grey home decor ideas using the Pantone Color of the Year for 2021. These are Dollar Tree DIYs so they are super inexpensive and are great if you’re looking for ways on how to use yellow in home decor.

In the video below, I share some thoughts on the color of the year from a graphic designer’s perspective. But if you want to get right into the tutorials, then scroll on down!

If you’re new to Artsy Cupcake, you may not know I’m a full-time graphic designer who does home decor and crafts on YouTube and here on my blog. Since I’ve been a graphic designer my entire career, I’m kind of an expert when it comes to Pantone colors because I use them every day.

If you aren’t familiar with Pantone, it’s basically a color naming system, so you can easily communicate what color you want to use on a design. All the colors are conveniently named with numbers and letters. This helps if there is a language barrier, you just show the color swatch and everyone’s on the same page.

Every year, Pantone comes out with a color that is anticipates the mood of the upcoming year with trends and emotions. Being the nerdy designer that I am, I actually get kind of excited to hear what Pantone chooses every year. And for 2021 they went with TWO colors! And they are about as opposite as you can get. I kind of feel they did this to cover all the bases, since last year’s Classic Blue, which was described with words like “trust” and “security” and well, let’s just say Classic Blue did not fit the overall feeling of 2020.

For 2021, Pantone has named a bright yellow and neutral grey as colors of the year.

Pantone describes these colors as “A marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting. it expressed positivity supported by fortitude.”

I love that. I love those positive words because who can’t use those things in their life, right?

Ok, let’s get going on 3 different crafts that will be great to add a few pops of color to your home.

// DIY Yellow Wall Art

I found this frame at Dollar Tree and already tore it apart for another project. But I like to upcycle and recycle my supplies, so I always have stuff like this laying around ready to go for a fresh new DIY.

I found this grey patterned contact paper at Dollar Tree and traced the glass frame shape onto the contact paper. Then I just stuck it right on the glass. Yes, you can get pretty decent glass frames at Dollar Tree!

I wanted to create some sort of three dimensional wreath for this framed piece. I thought of a floral ball I had made out of an old book and I’m going to take a similar approach. We’ll be using 2 different yellow papers.

I started with some yellow card stock and cut out a few with my paper stamper. I used a dowel to fold it up into a petal type of shape.

Then I thought I would add some texture and a hint of color by using this yellow ruled notepad paper.

I painted the frame in a flat white. And it looks like I have enough petals to create the wreath.

I traced a circle and then hot glued the petals down one by one, alternating the 2 shades of yellow paper to give it some dimension.

I added a yellow gingham bow as the finishing touch.

// Yellow Tulip Florals DIY

You may remember these Dollar Tree gift boxes from a previous post. I used the lids in a Valentine’s Day DIY and now we are going to use the base of the gift box to make a cheerful floral arrangement.

I started by wrapping these boxes with the grey patterned contact paper.

I finished the edges with some of that yellow gingham ribbon at the top and bottom. I secured the ribbon in place with a dot of hot glue.

I found these chalkboard clothespins at Dollar Tree and removed the clothespin and painted the edges white.

I’m so excited because I just organized my craft closet and I will be sharing that post soon. It made finding small items like these clothespins so easy. It’s amazing how much time you save with an organized space.

I chose to write the words joy, love and peace for this project. Those words have basically been my mantra lately. Sometimes I go for a jog or walk and instead of my mind racing with different things, I just repeat this message to myself over and over again with each step. If you think positive thoughts, you can attract those positive things into your life. So, I figure it doesn’t hurt to have these words always top of mind.

I’m curious what positive words do you think are most important to have on repeat in your mind? Leave me a comment below with your personal mantra!

The last step is to add the flowers. I found these yellow tulips on Amazon, but I know Dollar Tree has a nice selection of yellow florals. You could get probably around 3 bunches at Dollar Tree and get just as full of an effect as these.

 // Yellow and Grey Welcome Sign

This is actually a metal stove cover from Dollar Tree that I had made into a Christmas sign. I have used these stove covers for other projects like this one and this one here. We are going to be upcycling this project. I already pulled the bow off and am just going to add a coat of flat white spray paint.

I want to create a grey wood look. A sponge brush works really well for this. The trick to getting that faux wood look is to mix up your paint, but don’t mix it up perfectly. You want a few streaks of black and white in there to make it look like wood grain texture.

Once the grey paint dried, I taped it off so I could paint the center part yellow.

Then I added a little ribbon and some stick on letters. I like that I can swap out these letters for something else later, since they are sticky but not permanent.

I created a bow that we will attach to the top.

And here is the final look. I’m so happy with how it came out!
