The Ultimate Pottery Barn Bedroom Makeover with Amazon Finds

If you want to get the Pottery Barn look, but are on a budget, check out how I transformed my guest bedroom and got the same look for less money with some Amazon finds. I did a video showing the big reveal of my guest bedroom below, if you want to check it out.

// the pottery barn “look”

What makes every Pottery Barn showroom have that certain “look”? The Pottery Barn style is so timeless and inviting. That’s why I chose this classic style for my guest bedroom.

If you’ve been following my posts, you may know that I recently moved from Texas to Colorado. That means there are a lot of new rooms to decorate, like this guest bedroom in the basement. It is so boring, right?!

Every good project should start with an inspiration board. Oh, how I would love to be a stylist for one of these Pottery Barn photo shoots. Here are the 6 images I found on potterybarn.com and thought they were all great options as inspiration for my guest room. See how they all have a similar vibe?

So, how do you get this aesthetically pleasing Pottery Barn look for less money? Here are three key points I kept in mind for my bedroom makeover.

1 // layer materials and textures

Breezy linens, low maintenance natural materials are prominent in these Pottery Barn inspiration photos. Layering the fabrics in the right way is key.

A good way to layer without being overwhelming is using tone on tone. Pottery Barn leans towards neutrals like whites, ivories, grey, blush and very light blue.

Another way to layer is to mix up the textures like sheer fabrics, cotton, and linens. This will make the room look really interesting with all the different textures, instead of just sticking to one fabric, like cotton.

2 // make it ultra comfy and inviting

I don’t know about you, but whenever I step into a Pottery Barn, I always collapse on one of their couches. Maybe it is all the shopping I had been doing, or maybe it is because their rooms look inviting and comfortable. A guest bedroom is somewhere you want your visitors to feel welcome and special, yet not feel like they’re going to break something.

How do you accomplish this? With light and bright colors, fluffy bedding and a comfortable place to sit, relax and enjoy some down time.

The Pottery Barn look is minimalist yet maximalist at the same time, with not too many elements in the room, but then an overload of PILLOWS! I think including lots of pillows and throws is what gives the welcoming feeling to these Pottery Barn examples.

3 // timeless elegance

Another thing I noticed is that their style is timeless. They aren’t following trends. Just classic, elegant style which, along with the other items I mentioned,  we can create that high end Pottery Barn vibe for a fraction of the cost.

And how are we going to do that? Amazon to the rescue! I narrowed my inspiration photo down to one and shopped that photo on Amazon.

// my amazon finds

I was planning on making my own headboard, but I found one on Amazon for almost the same as what it would have cost to make one. The nightstands claim “easy assembly” and they actually were really easy to put together…that was a pleasant surprise. The bedding was SO SOFT! You get that extra bit of texture from the seersucker on the white linens.

I’m really happy with all these purchases and they came in at a fraction of the cost of what Pottery Barn’s prices were.

For that feature wall above the headboard, I want to copy this picture wall from the inspiration photo. But without paying Pottery Barn prices.

I took a look at the styles of images on this wall and tried to figure out what made them appealing. Lots of historic architecture and some abstract desert scenes. I got to work looking online for images with a similar style and downloaded some free images.

I bought 9 Dollar Tree picture frames. Yes, $1 each for frames that have glass and even a mat on some of them. Now, these mats and frames aren’t the highest quality, but when you’re doing a picture gallery like this where you’re going to have a lot of different things going on the wall, you don’t really notice the quality of each individual frame so much.

I arranged my frames on the floor to make sure I liked the layout, before putting these on the wall.

I was really happy with how this wall of art came out and for $9, that beats $850 for all of the prints from Pottery Barn.

Now we have these little projects out of the way, scroll down to see the before and after!
