WEEK 1 | Small Guest Bedroom Ideas on a Budget

Do you want to see some small guest bedroom ideas on a budget? Over the next 4 weeks I am going to be sharing my guest bedroom before and after with some DIY bedroom makeover ideas. Back in June, I did a master bedroom makeover and I was SO happy with how it came out. Now, my guest bedroom needs a little love, so we are moving on to this very plain room, but I have some ideas on how to spice it up. Today, I will be sharing my vision for this room, so you can get a peek of what’s to come.

// room of the month challenge

This is week 1 of 4 weeks of the October room of the month challenge. Today I am going to share my guest bedroom, as it is now, and give you a peek at my inspiration board and the ideas I have for some elegant bedroom decorating ideas.

Week 2 you will get to join in on all the shopping fun and finding new items to decorate my guest bedroom.

See week 2 post here!

Week 3 you will get a sneak peek at the room as it’s coming together.

And then, week 4 will be the big, exciting REVEAL!

// the room

Ok, let’s talk about this guest bedroom transformation. I have two guest bedrooms. One is downstairs and is decent, although I may eventually redo that one too. You might recognize this upstairs bedroom, because I sometimes film my YouTube videos in here, but you don’t see the other side of the room because, well, there isn’t much to it! I usually film in front of this huge dresser, which is actually a dining room buffet that didn’t fit in our dining room, but it makes a nice accent piece in this room. It’s really heavy and, well, it’s probably just going to stay put, so we’ll work around it. I put some little lamps on it and haven’t hung anything on the walls yet, so this guest room definitely needs a lot of dressing up.

This upstairs guest room is probably the lightest and brightest room in the house, which is why I love filming my intro’s in there. A lot of light in a room is perfect when you are welcoming guests into your home. Over the next 4 weeks, I will be looking into some new bedding, curtains and a few DIY’s to make this space feel welcoming and cheerful.

how to redecorate a guest bedroom

Most of my home is decorated in taupes and greys. I did keep that theme for the master bedroom makeover and I would like to do something neutral in here as well, but maybe have a subtle accent color such as seafoam green or navy that plays into the decor. I would also like to keep it light and bright, maybe more on the end of the light grey spectrum where my master bedroom had more of the medium to dark greys.

Just as reference, I want to remind you what my inspiration was for my master bedroom, so you can see how different neutrals really can be.

I was going for a deeper more luxurious restoration hardware type look in my master. I have the oil rubbed bronze, the deep grays and dark browns. And I think I accomplished this with the final product!

All very neutral, but let’s compare this to the lighter neutrals I am wanting in my guest bedroom.

You can see there is a totally different vibe going on. This is my inspiration board and it is always helpful to put together ideas you have for a room, so you can pinpoint the similarities in the inspiration photos and figure out what you like best about the rooms and what you want to incorporate in your room makeover.

So, what similarities in these photos do you see? Let me know your feedback in the comments section below!

What stands out to me, first and foremost is the neutral yet bright and light feel. I think I’ve said “light and bright” about 10 times, so let’s assume that’s the theme here! But that is exactly what you want in a guest room because it really feels welcoming. I also notice that the curtains are all either light grey or off white or a light taupe.

There also appears to be an abundance of pillows and blankets to make the rooms feel cozy. And then they have that bench at the end of the bed, which is great for guests to place their luggage on or just sit and relax after a long trip.

I will definitely need to be adding a headboard and artwork above the headboard and the lamps all seem to be on nightstands on either side of the bed.

There is some subtle additions of color, such as on the top right hand one they used those seafoam green images above the bed and then tied that in with some greenery in the form of fresh flowers. The top left one may look neutral at first glance but those yellowish golden images above the bed add some color to the room and could easily be tied throughout by using golden touches here and there. So, I may play around with a little color in my guest bedroom after I lay the neutral foundation.

// next week is shopping!

Now that I’ve put this inspiration board together, I can’t wait to get to the fun part – shopping for a few new items and making those DIY’s. I am going to try and spend as little as I can.
